Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo: skiing on waste, heating with sewage

How much does a tonne of CO2 weigh in a city’s budget?

The question comes from Oslo, where every measure in the climate budget, voted alongside the financial budget since 2017, is assigned to a department that reports on it. Copenhagen has put a ski slope on the roof of the plant that burns its waste. In Stockholm, the homes of Hammarby Sjöstad are heated with wastewater from the treatment plant next door. The group travels between the three capitals by train. Visits are confirmed with each place when the quote is drawn up.

IMMERSION 1

Copenhagen, days 1 to 3: the slope on the incinerator

CopenHill’s ski slope covers the roof of the Amager waste-to-energy plant, designed by BIG. At Bloxhub, more than 350 companies, associations and public bodies work on the city. Novo Nordisk, the diabetes specialist, is controlled by its foundation.

IMMERSION 2

Stockholm, days 4 to 6: heat from the sewers

Hammarby Sjöstad, decided in 1996, is heated with treated wastewater and sucks its waste away through an underground network. At Norra Djurgårdsstaden, 236 hectares of port and gasworks are becoming a district around the old gasholders. In Eskilstuna, an hour away by train, the ReTuna mall sells only second-hand goods.

IMMERSION 3

Oslo, days 7 to 9: the carbon budget

Oslo voted its first climate budget for 2017. Between Aker Brygge and Nesoddtangen, three electric ferries recharge at the quay in under ten minutes. By the fjord, the Deichman library also lends tools and offers 3D printers.
