In 2012 Copenhagen set itself the goal of carbon neutrality by 2025; it dropped that deadline in 2022, for lack of state funding to capture its incinerator’s CO2. Since 2019 that incinerator, CopenHill, has carried a 9,000 m² ski slope on its roof. On the harbour, in the BLOX building, BLOXHUB brings together some 350 urban development organisations. Novo Nordisk is controlled by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, whose holding company has 77% of the votes. Leadership teams see how a long-term shareholder shapes a company’s decisions.
Since 2017, the Amager Bakke plant, run by ARC for five municipalities including Copenhagen, has burned waste in two furnaces and produced up to 63 MW of electricity and 247 MW of heat. On 4 October 2019, its roof, designed by BIG, opened to the public with a ski slope. ARC runs tours of the plant for professional groups of 8 to 25.

On Copenhagen’s harbour front, Bloxhub brings together some 350 companies, research institutions, organisations and public bodies working on the sustainable city. It occupies 9,000 m² across two buildings, including BLOX, designed by OMA, built by the Realdania foundation and opened in 2018. Creative Denmark, a public-private partnership for the Danish creative industries, is based in the same building. Bloxhub hosts delegations on request.

Novo Nordisk specializes in the design and production of treatments for diabetes, hormonal treatments and obesity. Its particularity: the Novo Nordisk Foundation controls it through its holding company, Novo Holdings, which holds a majority of the voting rights.
