Brittany north and south: the worm, the hops and the open sea

Who invents in Brittany, and with what?

In Morlaix, the company Hemarina extracts an oxygen carrier for medicine from the haemoglobin of a sand worm, the lugworm. In the Côtes-d’Armor, a farming couple revived an organic hop farm in four years, with a flock of sheep. On the port of Concarneau, the Low-Tech Lab has documented since 2013 techniques anyone can build and repair, on the same port as the Explore endowment fund and the Under The Pole programme. The route starts in Rennes, 1 h 30 from Paris by TGV. Visits are confirmed with each place when the quote is drawn up.

Three immersions for a Brittany learning expedition

IMMERSION 1

Rennes, days 1 and 2: assistive devices made to measure

At the Humanlab of the My Human Kit association, people with disabilities design their own assistive devices.

IMMERSION 2

Côtes-d’Armor and Morlaix, days 3 and 4: the hops and the worm

At Lezerzot, organic hops grow with the help of a flock of sheep. In Morlaix, Hemarina, founded by former CNRS researcher Franck Zal, uses the haemoglobin of the lugworm.

IMMERSION 3

Concarneau, days 5 to 7: the explorers’ port

Since 2013, the Low-Tech Lab has tested and shared simple, repairable techniques with open plans. The Explore endowment fund, set up by sailor Roland Jourdain and Sophie Vercelletto, funds exploration projects. The underwater programme Under The Pole is based on the same port.
