Marseille, Barcelona: the cloister and the superblock

What does a city do with its walls when money is short?

In the northern districts of Marseille, a former convent houses companies that train young people from the area. At Les Baumettes prison, a restaurant employs inmates in a training programme. In Barcelona, the city has closed entire crossroads to cars and turned them into squares: the superblocks of Sant Antoni and Gràcia. On the Collserola hills, a 130-hectare farm is the laboratory of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia. A direct train links the two cities. Visits are confirmed with each place when the quote is drawn up.

Three immersions for a Marseille and Barcelona learning expedition

IMMERSION 1

Marseille, days 1 to 3: the convent and the prison

At Le Cloître, a former convent in the northern districts, companies from growing sectors commit to training young people from the area. At Fort Saint-Nicolas, the Citadelle opens to artists and researchers. Les Beaux Mets, a restaurant and training workshop, serves its guests inside Les Baumettes prison.

IMMERSION 2

Barcelona, days 4 and 5: crossroads for pedestrians

In Poblenou, Barcelona’s first superblock turned two crossroads into squares in 2016; in Sant Antoni, 5,000 m² around the market were handed back to pedestrians in 2018. The group walks through both. In Barceloneta, facing the sea, Norrsken House brings together more than 1,300 members, entrepreneurs in technology and impact.

Collserola, days 6 and 7: the farm-laboratory

In the hills above Barcelona, the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia tests ways of living self-sufficiently at Valldaura, a former 130-hectare farm.
