Above Samedan in the Upper Engadine, a funicular opened in 1907 climbs to 2,456 metres in ten minutes. The hotel at the top station, renovated and extended in 2010 by Fanzun Architekten, became the first plus-energy hotel in the Alps: over a year, it produces more energy than it uses.
“

Sixteen 200-metre boreholes draw heat from the ground and store surplus summer sunshine in it; 56 m² of collectors set into the windows heat the water, and solar panels run alongside the track. With 50% more floor space, energy demand fell by 64%, and the 40,000 litres of heating oil burned each year are gone.

Sixteen stone-pine rooms with 32 beds, funicular rides included. Villa Lyss can be hired for meetings of up to 24, the panoramic restaurant seats 80 and the terrace 100. The Rhaetian Railway stops at Punt Muragl, at the foot of the funicular, which runs until 11 pm. The hotel opens from June to late October, then from mid-December to early April.
