Above Lake Maggiore, the Monescia hill became home in 1900 to a community seeking another way to live. More than a century later, Monte Verità gathers researchers from around the world every year and houses its guests in a Bauhaus hotel and houses scattered across the park.
“

Henry Oedenkoven and Ida Hofmann founded the community that made the hill a place of life reform. The hotel, first commissioned from Mies van der Rohe, was built by Emil Fahrenkamp for Baron von der Heydt. The Fondazione Monte Verità preserves and runs the site; it received the 2024 STAN award for heritage restoration.

Since 1989, ETH Zurich’s Stefano Franscini conferences have been held there every year. The centre has eight spaces for eight to 150 people, and the site can house up to 86 guests across the Bauhaus hotel, Villa Semiramis and the park houses. From Locarno station, a bus leads to Ascona, then up the hill.
