In Kreuzberg, market hall no. 9 opened on 1 October 1891, designed by Hermann Blankenstein, the city architect. A century later, a textile discounter took up much of it. In 2010 Berlin halted the sale to the highest bidder: the hall would go to the best plan.
“

The price was fixed at 1.15 million euros, on one condition: small shops, culture and social projects. The plan of Florian Niedermeier, Bernd Maier and Nikolaus Driessen won, and the hall reopened on 1 October 2011. Nearly thirty businesses have moved in; many products are organic and come from the region.

For a team, the hall lays a long table among the stalls, the Market-Dinner, for 20 to 60 guests, from 80 euros a head. A behind-the-scenes tour takes 10 to 15 people, from 20 euros. Kaffee Neun, by the entrance, can be hired for up to 40. Görlitzer Bahnhof station (U1) is a five-minute walk away.
