On a lake west of Berlin, from 1866 Albert Borsig, son of the founder of the Borsig locomotive works, turned a debt-ridden estate into a red-brick model farm that would reach 2,700 hectares. During the war his descendant Ernst von Borsig hosted the resistance members of the Kreisau Circle here.

The common-good estate

Michael Stober bought the estate in 2000 and made it a place for seminars. It generates its own electricity, heats with wood from its own forest and flushes its toilets with rainwater; it has drawn up a climate balance for meetings and overnight stays since 2013 and scores 768 points in the Economy for the Common Good balance sheet, among the highest scores.

There are 300 rooms in the hotel and the old Logierhaus, furnished mostly with natural materials, more than 30 meeting rooms and a kitchen that favours organic Bioland produce. The entrance gate carries the emblems of Carl von Gontard’s Oranienburg Gate, brought from Berlin in 1867. The RE4 runs from Berlin Hauptbahnhof to Nauen in 35 minutes, then bus 660 or a taxi, 15 minutes.
