An hour by boat from Stockholm, the island of Grinda has been run since 1998 by the Skärgårdsstiftelsen, a foundation set up in 1959 to keep the archipelago open to the public. In the middle of the island, the villa Ernst Stenhammar designed for Henrik Santesson, the first director of the Nobel Foundation, is now an inn.
“

The foundation has become the third-largest landowner in Stockholm County, with some forty sites open all year round. Grinda has been a nature reserve since 1998; a farm grazes old Swedish breeds there, mountain cattle, North Swedish horses and Gotland ponies, so that the old fields do not close over.

The villa turns 120 in 2026. It hosts meetings of 2 to 70 people, and from October to the end of April the inn and its 30 rooms can be let to a single group; 27 cabins add capacity from spring to autumn. Waxholmsbolaget and Cinderella boats leave from central Stockholm and reach the island in just over an hour, all year round.
