On an island in Stockholm, between Södermalm and Kungsholmen, the state locked people up for 250 years, starting with the women of the spinning house opened in 1724. The prison closed in 1975; since 1989 its cells have been hotel and youth hostel rooms.
“

Prisoners carried soil onto the bare rock and planted 3,000 trees along Lake Mälaren, which is why the island is now a park with its own beach. In 1982 the central prison was demolished; the Kronohäktet, extended in 1867 by the architect Carl Fredrik Hjelm, was kept. The hotel that occupies it holds the Nordic Swan ecolabel.

Cells sleep one to four people, breakfast included, and the prison museum is free for guests. Seventeen meeting rooms fill the old buildings; the largest, Tingssalen, seats 80, and a whole floor can be hired. Hornstull metro station is a ten-minute walk away, and night trains link Berlin to Stockholm.
