In Eskilstuna, next to the town’s recycling centre, ReTuna opened on 28 August 2015: the world’s first reuse shopping mall. Residents drop off toys, furniture, clothes and appliances at the “Returen” depot; the mall’s shops repair them, transform them and sell them again.
“

The mall belongs to Eskilstuna Energi och Miljö, the municipal company. The first sorting is done by AMA, the municipal service that helps people back into work; the shops do the second. In 2020 ReTuna sold 15.4 million kronor of reused goods, nearly 92% more than at the start, and it has created more than 50 jobs. A team sees a town, a back-to-work service and shopkeepers pass the same object along, each at its own stage.

The study visit takes you behind the scenes in about an hour: how the mall works, its history and its plans. It costs from 1,996 kronor excluding VAT per group per hour; above 20 people the group may be split in two, and cancellations must be made at least 24 hours ahead. The mall also rents out conference rooms, and a café serves lunch and fika. Address: Folkestaleden 7, Eskilstuna.
