Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam
At the tip of Java Island, where the liners of the Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland left for the Dutch East Indies from 1910 to 1970, the Amsterdam practice SeARCH built a nine-storey timber hotel around a subtropical garden that anyone walking by can enter.
“

On a concrete base, 176 of the 200 rooms arrived by truck as 30 m² solid-timber modules, façade, loggia and bathroom already fitted, and were stacked in three weeks. The timber is FSC or PEFC certified. More than 700 m² of solar panels cover the south and east façades; the hotel runs without air conditioning and is rated BREEAM Excellent.

Nearly every room has a loggia, facing the IJ or the city. On the first floor, three meeting rooms named after cities on Java look out over both the river and the garden; combined, they hold 200 people. The hotel offers groups a 45-minute tour of the building. Eurostar puts Paris about 3 h 20 away; from Centraal station, tram 26 gets there in two stops.
