In Thurgau, near Frauenfeld, a charterhouse almost nine centuries old became a foundation in 1977 that lives from its hotel, its seminars and its estate. Kartause Ittingen produces much of what it serves and employs people in supported work.

The monastery that feeds itself

Dairy, butcher’s, bakery, fish farm, gardens, wine cellar: the estate supplies the restaurant and the monastery shop. Part of the upkeep and daily running is done by people in supported work and housing. The site also holds two cantonal museums, the Kunstmuseum Thurgau and the Ittinger Museum.

With 68 rooms and 22 seminar rooms, the charterhouse is one of the best-known seminar houses in eastern Switzerland. Its model is largely self-financed by its activities, with donations on top. It is reached by train to Frauenfeld, then by bus.
