A fishing harbour saved

## Nusfjord Arctic Resort

At the end of an inlet on Flakstadøya, in the Lofoten Islands, Nusfjord lived off the great cod fishery: more than a thousand people crowded in each season. Slated for demolition to make way for a modern fishing plant, the village was chosen in 1975 as one of three Norwegian pilot projects for saving wooden buildings.

Nineteen people live here year-round. Nusfjord Arctic Resort lets the rorbuer, fishermen’s cabins on stilts, several of them built between 1888 and 1900 and now protected; it maintains the 1910 cod liver oil refinery and the general store, and offers premises to craftspeople willing to settle here for good.

A company can take over the whole village. The Loft, above Restaurant Karoline, seats 70 facing the harbour; the refinery and the restaurant hold 140. The rorbuer sleep two to six. Take the train to Bodø, the end of the Nordland Line, then the ferry to Moskenes, three to four hours, and an hour by road; Leknes airport is 30 minutes away.
