A hotel to repair a territory

## Fogo Island Inn

fogoislandinn.ca

On an island battered by the North Atlantic winds, a white vessel seems to have run aground facing infinity. Yet nothing here is accidental. Fogo Island Inn is a deeply considered project, born of a radical wish: to give an isolated community a future by building on its culture, its craftsmanship and its stories. Every piece of furniture, every plate, every line of the building bears the mark of a local craftsperson. Here, design does not decorate, it regenerates.

Far from hotel standards, the stay becomes an apprenticeship. You are welcomed by an islander who takes you walking along spray-swept trails, tells the story of their village and shares a slice of wild berry pie. You eat, read, listen to the wind, the stories, the silences. Nothing is frozen: everything is alive, inhabited, woven with concrete care.

Because this hotel is also a foundation. The Shorefast Foundation reinvests 100% of its revenue in local development projects: traditional crafts, education, research on island economies. The hotel becomes a lever for autonomy rather than a driver of dependence. No shareholders, no dividends: here the economy is circular, regenerative and transparent. It shows that beauty can be made without giving in to folklore, and that a rooted economy can be invented without turning away from the world. It tells us that the end of the world can be a starting point.
