Building without spoiling

## Portmeirion

portmeirion.wales

On a peninsula in north Wales, architect Clough Williams-Ellis began building an entire village in 1925 to prove that a beautiful site could be developed without spoiling it, and even enhanced. Portmeirion now belongs to a charitable trust, and its houses are guest rooms.

In 1925 he bought the Aber Iâ estate, “a neglected wilderness”, and renamed it. Over half a century he assembled colourful houses, a campanile and fragments of demolished buildings: the Grade I listed Town Hall holds the Hercules Hall, a Jacobean room saved from Emral Hall in Flintshire. The village has always been run as a hotel.

Fifty-seven rooms: 14 in the hotel on the Dwyryd estuary, 11 at Castell Deudraeth, 32 in the village houses, plus 12 cottages sleeping 3 to 9. The Hercules Hall seats 120 theatre-style, the Tudor Room 40. Cambrian Coast trains from Birmingham or Shrewsbury stop at Minffordd, where a courtesy car meets guests.
