### From a convent to Les Baumettes prison, places put back to work

In Saint-Jérôme, in northern Marseille, the Apprentis d’Auteuil foundation turned a former convent, Le Cloître, into a workplace; every business that moves in agrees to train young people. By the Old Port, the Fort Saint-Nicolas citadel, closed to the public for more than three centuries, has hosted tours and events since 2024. Inside Les Baumettes prison, the restaurant Les Beaux Mets, opened in 2022, employs and trains inmates nearing the end of their sentences. Leadership teams look at how to recruit and train people who struggle to find work.

### Three immersions for a Marseille learning expedition

IMMERSION 1

#### A 1932 convent, 624 young people trained

In Marseille’s northern districts, on Saint-Bruno hill, the Sisters of the Visitation lived at Le Cloître from 1932 to 1985. Bought in 1989 by Apprentis d’Auteuil and renovated in 2017 and 2018, the six-hectare estate hosts a dozen resident organisations, including the Simplon digital school and the restaurant Les Jardins du Cloître. In 2023, 624 young people trained there, 283 of them from priority neighbourhoods.

IMMERSION 2

#### A fort closed for 360 years, open since 2024

On 4 May 2024, Fort Saint-Nicolas, at the entrance to the Old Port, opened to the public after 360 years behind closed doors. The association La Citadelle de Marseille, which runs it on a 40-year lease, hosts artist residencies and research projects there. The fort welcomed 185,000 visitors in 2025; groups can visit on weekday mornings or afternoons, by appointment.

IMMERSION 3

#### A restaurant inside Les Baumettes prison

Opened in October 2022, Les Beaux Mets is the first restaurant in France set inside a prison and open to the public. Run by the Festin association as a work-integration project, it occupies a former 234 m² office floor in Les Baumettes, with 42 covers. It serves lunch on weekdays, booked at least four days ahead with ID required, and takes groups of up to 50.
