### A bionic hand built for 200 euros

In Concarneau, the Explore endowment fund, set up in 2013 by offshore sailor Roland Jourdain and Sophie Vercelletto, lends workshops and pontoons to expeditions. Under The Pole prepares its dives there to deep reefs, down to 200 metres. In Rennes, the non-profit My Human Kit designs assistive devices together with the disabled people who use them; its first bionic hand, 3D-printed, cost 200 euros to make. Leaders learn how to design a product with the people who will use it, on a tight budget.

### Three immersions for a Brittany learning expedition

IMMERSION 1

#### An explorers’ base on an industrial estate

In 2013, sailor Roland Jourdain and Sophie Jourdain Vercelletto, who ran the Vendée Globe for almost ten years, set up the Explore endowment fund in Concarneau. It supports five explorations, including Under The Pole, the Low-Tech Lab and Plastic Odyssey. Its Base Explore, on the Moros industrial estate, brings together these teams’ offices and workshops and seminar rooms across 2,000 m².

IMMERSION 2

#### Divers between 30 and 200 metres

Founded in 2008 by Ghislain Bardout and Emmanuelle Périé-Bardout, Under The Pole ran its first expedition near the North Pole in 2010, then spent 21 months in Greenland in 2014 and 2015. Its fourth programme, DEEPLIFE (2021-2030), studies the zone between 30 and 200 metres deep, where the team collected a coral at 174 metres. Its work has produced more than 25 scientific papers.

IMMERSION 3

#### Assistive devices designed by their users

In Rennes’s Beauregard district, the My Human Kit association has run the Humanlab since 2017, a fab lab where people with disabilities design their own assistive devices. More than 300 projects have been built there and documented openly. A second workshop has been electrifying wheelchairs since 2022, and the network now counts more than 15 Humanlabs in France and French-speaking Africa. Open days are on Thursdays.
