Salt in common

## Terre de Sel, marais salants de Guérande

In the salt marshes of Guérande, 225 salt workers rake the salt by hand and sell it together. Their cooperative was born of a fight: in the 1970s, facing industrial salt and property developers, the people who worked the salt pans joined forces to keep them alive.

In 1972 a group of salt workers founded a producers’ association, which became an agricultural cooperative in 1988. Every summer the members pool their harvests to steady their incomes. The first sea salt to win the Label Rouge in 1991, the cooperative has sold its whole output itself since 1997, without traders, and the number of salt pans in use has grown by 20% in twenty years.

Its subsidiary Terre de Sel opens the marshes every day of the year: a salt worker or a naturalist guide leads the walk around the pans, from 45 minutes to two and a half hours, at €9 to €13 a head, for 18 to 150 people. A tasting can follow in the exhibition space, booked for the group. A team sees producers who chose to share their harvests in order to last, and how much trust that choice takes.
