Keeping the sky dark

## Observatoire du Pic du Midi

At 2,877 metres, on the summit of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, the domes of an observatory completed in 1882 float above a sea of clouds. Researchers still study the Solar System here, and the mountain is the heart of an International Dark Sky Reserve, designated in December 2013.

In 1909 its 50-centimetre refractor, one of the largest in the world, put an end to the myth of the canals on Mars. Threatened with closure in the late 1990s, the observatory now lives on through its 1-metre and 2-metre telescopes, where new cameras are tested, and through the public it welcomes. A team watches researchers work at the mercy of the sky: patience, precision, and decisions taken together when the weather turns.

The cable car climbs from La Mongie in two stages. The Night at the Summit takes 27 guests at most, in 12 double and 3 single rooms: drinks, sunset, dinner, stargazing in the Charvin dome with its 400 mm telescope, then, in the morning, a visit to the research domes, closed to the public. Book several months ahead; the site closes in May and November.
