Carbon turned to stone

## Carbfix

At the foot of Mount Hengill, 25 km from Reykjavík, Carbfix dissolves CO₂ from a geothermal power plant in water and injects it into basalt. The rock does the rest: more than 95% of the injected CO₂ turns into minerals in under two years, locked in stone for good.

Carbfix began as a university research project. Its injection system can now store about 12,000 tonnes of CO₂ a year, captured with H₂S from two ON Power geothermal plants. In September 2026 the foreign ministers of the Benelux countries came to see its wells. A team measures how much patience, monitoring and proof it takes for a laboratory idea to work at the scale of a power plant.

The Carbfix group tour lasts one to one and a half hours: the geothermal exhibition, then an injection well and its surroundings, with a science communicator, after a safety video, helmet, vest and glasses provided. A 90-minute to two-hour version adds a presentation in a meeting room, for ages 16 and over. Access to the wells depends on the weather. Prices on request; the site is just off Highway 1, 25 km east of Reykjavík.
