At 2,883 metres, above the Gorner Glacier, the Monte Rosa Hut produces 90% of the energy it uses. Designed by ETH Zurich students with the architects Bearth & Deplazes, it sleeps 120 climbers facing the Matterhorn, in an aluminium crystal set on the rock.

It opened on 25 September 2009, for ETH’s 150th anniversary, after four semesters of studio work and two summers on site: five storeys of CNC-cut timber frames on a 16-metre octagonal base. The solar panels on the south facade and their batteries cover 90% of its needs; since 2014 wastewater has been treated on site, where the old hut let it run into the glacier.

A team comes up with a mountain guide: from Zermatt, the Gornergrat railway stops at Rotenboden, then four to four and a half hours of alpine route, crampons on for the glacier. The 120 beds are booked online, at CHF 116 a night with half board for an adult who is not an Alpine Club member. In 2027 the hut opens from 18 March to 17 May for ski touring and from 18 June to 18 September.
