## Auberge de jeunesse de Loch Ossian (Loch Ossian Youth Hostel)

On Rannoch Moor, in the Highlands, no road leads to Loch Ossian Youth Hostel. You step off the train at Corrour, the highest mainline station in the UK, then walk twenty minutes along a track to the shore of the loch. Twenty beds, a kitchen, a stove to dry your boots.

The timber boathouse and stables date from around 1895: Sir John Stirling Maxwell, owner of the Corrour Estate, waited there for his steam yacht. In 1931 he gave them to the Scottish Youth Hostels Association, which made it one of its very first hostels. It runs off-grid: local hydro and solar power, composting toilets, grey water filtered through a reed bed. In 2012 it won a UK Water Efficiency Award.

A team of ten to twenty can hire the whole hostel, or book one of its two dorms. The kitchen is self-catering: the group brings its own provisions, and the Corrour Station House restaurant takes group bookings with notice. You arrive on the Glasgow to Fort William line. The hostel closes from 10.30 to 16.30, time to walk: the hills start at the door.
